Has Haiti Been Forgotten?

The short answer is "NO!"  Of the 27 projects funded by the 2009 Thank Offering, two projects are in Haiti:  clean water and cisterns development and famine relief with medical care.
Gifts during Soup and Scripture on October 4th were over $300.00.  Thanks be to God!
HAITI:  WHAT DONNA KNOWS FIRSTHAND!  Donna returns in December as part of her 4x yearly missionary effort.  Purchase of the Haitian jewelry from Donna benefits the children, directly.  Gifts to Donna's mission efforts for her Christmas visit can be made to GCPCPA:  memo to PW/ Haiti for Donna Tyson.

Congo Palm Project

The Presbyterian Women Palm Project is a new mission program in which groups or individuals can make donations for the establishment of palm plantations in Congo, once the worlds largest producer of palm oil. The destruction of agricultural capabilities in Congo has forced the country to import cooking oil from Malaysia for its domestic use. Rather than continuing this dependency, the Congolese could plant new varieties of palms, providing both needed palm oil and income. This opportunity does not require huge financial investments, but can have great returns.

With funding from this project, womens groups and hospitals in the Presbyterian community of Congo will be able to plant new varieties of Costa Rican palms that produce three times more palm oil than the current stock can produce. These new varieties of palms grow low to the ground, allowing women to participate in the planting, maintenance and harvest of the crop. One $20,000 investment from PW will fund 80 hectares of palms that will generate $200,000 per year for 30 years to subsidize educational programs, hospitals and clinics.

Presbyterian Women Palm Project facts

  • A $20 gift to the Palm Project will purchase about 10 plants.
  • Current old stock of palm trees produces only 1,000 to 2,000 liters per hectare.
  • New varieties from Costa Rica produce 3,000 to 6,000 liters per hectare.
  • There are 150 trees per hectare.
  • Current prices for oil in the Kasai region of Congo varies from $0.40 to $1.00 per liter.
  • A small plantation of 450 palms at a high school will cover the tuition costs for 60 girls.
  • Current palm plantations at hospitals in Bibanga and Bulape will each produce from $60,000 to $90,000 per year when they start to produce in three years. This is more than twice the subsidy PC(USA) now gives to these mission hospitals.

Thank Offering--Fall

Thank Offering

The Thank Offering is a PW offering collected in the fall of each year that gives women a tangible way to express their gratitude for the special blessings in their lives. The offering funds projects such as agricultural development,   child care, community organization, criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women’s concerns. At least 40 percent of this offering supports health ministries throughout the world. The remaining 60 percent funds new creative ideas for mission.

Soup and Scripture Supper:  Celebrating Our Blessings!

--Sunday evening, October 4th at 5:00 pm with Massanetta's Keynote Speaker, Donna Tyson!  Hugely successful this year with 70+ attending and enjoying delicious soups and experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit with us as we worshiped and learned together.  More than 21 guests were present and $300+ given to help bring relief and aid to children and families in the US and internationally.  Additionally, women purchased Haitian jewelry that provides gifts for food, clean water, and further ministry to Haitian children through the mission efforts of Donna Tyson.

Birthday Offering

What Is the Birthday Offering?

The Birthday Offering is a PW offering collected in the spring of each year to celebrate the blessings in the lives of Presbyterian Women. The offering funds up to five projects that are not included in ongoing General Assembly mission support, such as agricultural development, child care, community organization, criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women’s concerns.

PW in the Congregations (PWCs) typically collect the Birthday Offering in the spring and dedicate their offerings at spring gatherings. No giving guidelines are suggested other than “give as you are blessed.”

    JUNE is our Birthday month!

History of the Birthday Offering

In 1922, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Woman’s Auxiliary (PCUS), it was decided that an offering should be made for a definite cause. That same year, Hallie Paxson Winsborough, superintendent of women’s work, visited Miss Dowd’s School for Girls in Kochi, Japan. Realizing the school’s needs, she challenged members of the Women’s Auxiliary to give one penny for each year of their life as a birthday gift to the school. Over the years, that tradition has become known as the Birthday Offering. Presbyterian Women have given more than $29 million in support of mission projects throughout the world.

The Least Coin

Fellowship of Least Coin

The Fellowship of the Least Coin (FLC) is an ecumenical prayer movement focused on peace, justice and reconciliation. As each of us offers prayers, we should set aside a least coin as a symbol of our prayers. As they are collected, these coins join many others from all parts of the world to advance the causes of justice, peace and reconciliation and to support a variety of projects that help women and children achieve a better life.

Both JOY and Eclectics circles collect the least coins and offer the Prayer of the Least Coin Fellowship. This prayer is said by thousands of women the world over and has been a global ecumenical women's prayer movement for more than 50 years. Our women join with every other nationality to pray for peace, justice, and reconciliation among all families and peoples of the world.

Honorary Life Memberships

The symbol at the left represents and portrays the qualities of persons deserving the honor and recognition of an Honorary Life Membership.

The following are some meanings found in the symbol:

  • The caring, supportive hands represent women who seek to build an inclusive community of Presbyterian Women.
  • The leaf represents growth of our personal and corporate response to Jesus Christ as we nurture our faith.
  • The dove indicates our work for peace in our own lives and throughout the world, shown in the globe.
  • At the center of the design is the cross, by which our sins are forgiven and we are freed to live in Christ who is at the center of our lives.
  • The overall design is of a butterfly, a symbol of newness in Christ and the emergence of a new creation — Presbyterian Women.

An Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), is conferred upon an individual in recognition of faithful service in some area of church work.
